The Ideal Retirement Destination: Factors and Social Engagement

Website Blog Banner Size (35)

Looking for the perfect retirement destination that suits your needs? Look no further! Scholar, a trusted source for scholarship information, has recently compiled a list of the top states for retirees based on factors such as healthcare, wellness, safety, affordability, and entertainment. Surprisingly, popular retirement hotspots like Florida didn't make the cut but states like Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts ranked high in various categories.

Connecticut took the top spot, boasting over 100 parks for retirees to enjoy and one of the country's lowest rates of uninsured seniors. Pennsylvania followed closely behind, with no taxes on retirement income and many nursing homes and geriatric health providers. Massachusetts secured its position as the best state for healthcare, offering excellent hospice and nursing home services and the lowest percentage of uninsured individuals over the age of 65.

On the other hand, states like New Mexico, Alaska, Wyoming, West Virginia, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Vermont, Montana, Louisiana, and Kansas were ranked at the bottom due to subpar healthcare, wellness, and safety conditions for retirees. Factors such as high violent crime rates, poor palliative care quality, elderly food insecurity, and low-quality public hospitals contributed to their low rankings.

When making the critical decision of where to retire, retirees must consider not only the cost of living and accommodation but also the availability of high-quality healthcare and opportunities for recreation. Conducting thorough research, consulting with financial advisors, and even visiting potential destinations can help retirees make an informed choice.

Furthermore, staying socially active during retirement has been proven to impact health and well-being positively. Research from the National Institute on Aging highlights the benefits of social engagement, including lower rates of depression, improved cognitive function, and reduced risk of chronic diseases. So, along with finding the perfect retirement location, retirees should also prioritize activities that keep them socially connected, such as volunteering, joining social clubs, or taking classes.

The rankings are based on data provided by 6,186 individual advisors and their firms and include qualitative and quantitative criteria. Factors included in the rankings: assets under management, revenue produced for the firm, regulatory record, quality of practice, and philanthropic work. Investment performance is not an explicit component because not all advisors have audited results and because performance figures often are influenced more by a client's risk tolerance than by an advisor's investment picking abilities. The ranking may not be representative of any one client's experience, is not an endorsement, and is not indicative of the advisor's future performance. The Forbes ranking of Best-In-State Wealth Advisors, developed by SHOOK Research, is based on an algorithm of qualitative criteria, mostly gained through telephone and in-person due diligence interviews, and quantitative data. Those advisors that are considered have a minimum of seven years of experience, and the algorithm weights factors like revenue trends, assets under management, compliance records, industry experience, and those that encompass best practices in their practices and approach to working with clients. Portfolio performance is not a criterion due to varying client objectives and a lack of audited data. Out of approximately 32,725 nominations, more than 5,000 advisors received the award. This ranking is not indicative of an advisor's future performance, is not an endorsement, and may not be representative of (individual clients' experience.
